Clerk of courts
The Champaign County Clerk of Courts office, the "core of the Court," plays a vital role in serving the interests of justice. This role includes:
- Filing, docketing, indexing, and preserving all court pleadings for civil and felony criminal cases.
- Maintaining filings for the 2nd District Court of Appeals
- Collection of all revenue related to court costs, bonds, fines and forfeitures.
The Clerk of Courts has the authority to issue writs to carry out Court orders including summons, subpoenas, warrants to arrest and convey to penal institutions, and signs the death warrant in capital cases.
The Clerk of Courts Office is also responsible for the collection of thousands of dollars annually of sales and use taxes in the Auto Title Division when issuing cettificates of title to the residents Ohio for their purchases of:
- Off-road vehicles
- Motor/mobile homes
The Auto Title office also serves as a passport agent.
The Clerk of Courts Office serves as a deputy registrar for Champaign County. Some of the services offered at our location includes(but not limited to):
- Drivers License and State ID issuances
- Vehicle tag registration
- Reinstatement payments
- Recreational vehicle licensing
- Handicapped placards
- Out of state inspections
The County Clerk of Courts is an elected position that serves as a four-year term. The current Clerk of Courts, Penny S. Underwood, has been with the Clerk of Courts Office since 2004, where she started her career in the Auto Title Division, Penny S. Underwood is serving her third term as the elected Champaign County Clerk of Courts.
